Jean Lab Conclusion Dab!

In this lab, we asked the question, “What concentration of bleach is best to fade the color out of new denim material in 10 minutes without visible damage to the fabric?”. My group and I found out that 50% concentration of bleach is best to fade the color out of new denim material in 10 minutes without visible damage to the fabric. I the lab we had to rank the color removal and the fabric damage from 0-no visible color change or no fabric damage and 10-all color of denim jeans faded to white or most visible damage to fabric. When we tested with 100% bleach, it damaged the fabric the most with ranging numbers including: 3, 1, 2. The average of the fabric damage ranking for 100% bleach is 2.  The color removal in 100% bleach was almost all its color almost fading into white. With this information we know that 100% bleach could not be the concentration of bleach to best fade without damage. But for the 50% concentration of bleach, the color removal was 55% less than the 100% color removal. We resorted to the 50% bleach which did not damage the fabric as much. This information came from the lab in which we learned from lecture notes, textbooks, and other reliable sources and more including vodcasts we had for homework.

While our hypothesis was supported by our data, there could have been errors due to not fully reading the instructions. With this error, we submerged the fabric in 60 ml of bleach concentration for one minute, then put it on the lids. After this we soon cut out three more pieces of fabric got paper towels and started over wasting 10 minutes. My group and I went overtime going into break for 5 minutes. Due to these errors, in future experiments I would recommend reading instructions more carefully and pay attention what is going on.

This lab was done to demonstrate the proper use of scientific method, working safely, working as a group, and following instructions. From this lab I learned that mistakes can be made and you can succeed by learning from them, which helps me understand the concept of doing labs and solving problems and questions safely with my group. Based on my experience from this lab I learned how I can succeed while prospering with my teammates safely and effectively while working on scientific method and using the method properly. This concludes the Jean Lab experiment.
